The covenant is a promise made by God.  It is an intervention by God, made with a sacrifice and sealed with a sign.  The first covenant was by the Father, the sacrifice was mankind through the flood, and the sign was the rainbow.  The second covenant was by the Son, the sacrifice was His blood, and the sign is the cross.  The third covenant will be made by the Spirit,  the sacrifice will be mankind in the fire, and the sign is His presence amongst us forever.
